In response to the political movement for increased accountability for developmental services, a Quality Assurance Committee was formed in 2005. The purpose of the committee is:
“To establish an ongoing quality assurance process that will promote services and supports that are responsive to each individual’s personal goals and the goals of K-W Habilitation Services. This process is to have measurable outcomes.”
The committee soon realized that this process demanded a great deal of volunteer time and expertise to measure the various areas of service delivery that K-W Habilitation Services provides. A recommendation was made to the Board of Directors for creating a staff position dedicated to quality assurance. This was approved and funding was received by the Ministry of Community and Social Services for this new position.
The successful candidate for the Manager of Quality Assurance position was Deb Hurgett, a 27 year veteran with K-W Habilitation Services. Deb will be responsible to develop, plan, implement and evaluate quality assurance activities that identifies what people supported by KWHS want in their service delivery and what is possible for the agency to provide within their resources. That includes, but is not limited to:
- Ensuring that the opinions and wishes of the people involved in KWHS’s services are taken into consideration in the ongoing evolution of service delivery
- Reviewing and implementing accreditation processes
- Meeting with other developmental services agencies to share quality assurance best practices
- Agency policies and procedures
- Staff training and development
- Agency orientations for new employees
