Success Stories : Community Link

Community Link has been a part of the KWHS Community Placement Program for three years now and my how we have grown!

Community Link began with a pilot project to help people at the Kinsmen Training Centre make informed decisions regarding vocational involvement within the community.  A staff member was hired to facilitate discussion groups on a range of topics that include: Social Skills, Employability, Coping with Emotions and Healthy Lifestyles.  After a year and a half another staff member was hired and Community Link introduced its Supported Volunteer component.  Now there is an opportunity to both learn skills and experience some time limited volunteerism within the community.  We have Supported Volunteer sites at nursing homes, daycares, thrift stores and even museums!

Community Link has worked with more than 50 people over the past three years.  There are participants who are now working with Community Placement pursuing independent volunteer and job placements.  The best part is that people are learning, growing and making friends in the community.
