Success Stories : Kaptain Kris’ Excellent Adventure

Since starting with the Community Placement Program in August of 2004 Kris has had some unique job experiences such as a Customer Service Representative at Blockbuster Video, and for a period of time even held a second part time job at Bulk Barn. According to Kris however, nothing has been as rewarding and enjoyable as his position at the Delta Hotel where he has been employed since July 2008. Kris’ Employment Instructor recently sat down with him to get some further insight into his position of Bell Captain of the Delta Hotel and how his employment at the hotel came to be.

Why did you eventually decide to look for new employment to replace your job at Blockbuster Video?

As much as I liked my job at Blockbuster and dealing directly with customers, unfortunately due to the nature of the business and economic times for the entertainment industry, the consistency in hours was not there and I needed a position that could offer me at least 2-3 shifts per week.

How did you come to working for the Delta Hotel?

Through the Community Placement Program I was offered an interview at the Delta Hotel for a Bell Captain position and fortunately after a series of interviews I was hired for the position.

What are your job responsibilities?

I am happy to say that because I am a people person, this job lends itself perfectly to my personality as I am dealing with customers (hotel guests) during every aspect of my working day. My main responsibility is driving the Delta Shuttle van primarily for corporate guests such as Sunlife(to and from Sunlife head office) and Westjet (to and from the Region of Waterloo International airport). I have gained an excellent rapport with the guests from Sunlife and they nicknamed me Kaptain Kris. West Jet is a new group that I shuttle that I am starting to get to know, and so far they are an awesome group of people. When I am not driving the shuttle I assist guests in the lobby with their luggage or just answer any questions they might have such as where the “hot spots” are in town.

What do you like most about your job?

Since I am a people person I love the daily interaction and opportunities I have with new guests as well as the familiar faces I have come to know through driving the shuttle van. I am fortunate to work with an incredible team who support each other and provide the best experience for our guests.  I feel lucky that I am able to meet people from all walks of life such as celebrities, businessman and families. I am also working more than enough hours which has enabled me to have my own car and pay for the expenses that come with that. With the consistency in hours it makes it easier for me to budget and partake in other interests such as music, bowling, and golf.

Is there anything you find challenging in your position?

Having to say goodbye to the great people that I get to know through shuttling them on a frequent basis is sometimes hard. However, with saying goodbye to one group of guests I know I can look forward to meeting a new group and I always strive to give them the most positive experience at the hotel with hopes of living up to the excellent reputation that the Delta Hotel has. ALL ABOARD!!!!!!
