The Volunteer Action Force is a new initiative developed through the Community Placement Program. The VAF program is designed to encourage community building, networking, social opportunities and volunteer exposure. A pilot project of the VAF was completed with eight participants over a six month period.
In March 2010, the program was evaluated and it was determined that it would continue on a year contract. The group does one-shot volunteering with agencies in the Kitchener-Waterloo community. They have been to numerous locations including the Waterloo Region Food Bank, Kinsmen TV Auction, Mary’s Place, and Saint John’s Kitchen. Not only has the group been able to help out agencies in need and gain exposure but the group has formed friendships in unlikely places, whether it is with staff at the agencies or amongst themselves.
The program follows an empowerment model where experienced volunteers in the group are able to take leadership over the group and delegate tasks as well as help to organize events. The second round of the Volunteer Action Force will be commencing in May and will be looking for volunteer opportunities within the community throughout the 2010-2011 year.
